Biman negotiating Dubai authorities to deter gold smuggling

At a press briefing at Biman headquarters, the newly appointed managing director and CEO Kyle Haywood said that they are negotiating with Dubai authorities to increase security at their airports in order to deter people from smuggling gold.

“We’re doing whatever we can,” said Haywood, who has been in the airline industry for the last 25 years, serving with different international airlines like British Airways, Etihad Airways, and low-cost carrier Air Arabia.

Gold smuggling in Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport has been rising for the past couple of years and several employees of Biman have already been arrested for their alleged involvement in gold smuggling. Many of the Biman’s international flights that carried smuggled gold were from Dubai.

Haywood has expressed his strong commitment against corruption in Biman and said that there should be no room for corruption and management needs to be made tighter to stop corruption.

Responding to a query, he said that Biman has been working to stop fake booking against tickets to ensure that the genuine clients would book for Biman tickets and pay its costs.

Revenue earning is increasing as feedback to various modernization drives like introducing new aircrafts and retiring old ones but he also said that if Biman does not continue with modernization, they will be lagging behind by next 12 to 18 months.

Biman’s director (finance) AM Mosaddique Ahmed, director (administration) Rajpati Sarker, director (planning) Md Belayet Hossain and its senior officials were present at the press briefing.
