The ministry for environment and forest has taken steps to adopt necessary measures to prevent environmental disaster because of the spread of furnace oil from a derailed oil-carrying wagon at Bengura of Boalkhali in Chittagong.
The minister said the fall of the wagon from the railway truck is an accident and the government has the ability to tackle it.
Environment Secretary Dr. Kamal Uddin Ahmed said initiatives have been taken to tackle the situation within a short time through effective coordination.
A coordination committee has been formed with Chittagong divisional commissioner as its head to face the problem, he added.
Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) will purchase the oil to be collected from the affected site.
Public representatives, railway officials sand local people are collecting floating oil from water and taking measures so that the oil cannot spread in adjoin areas and the Karnafuli river.
Representatives from shipping ministry, railway ministry, health ministry, department of fisheries and PBC were present at the meeting.
