People throng JU Bird Fair

Birdwatchers and avian enthusiasts thronged at Jahangirnagar University marking its 14th annual daylong Bird Fair on Friday.

The fair, organised by the Department of Zoology and its Wildlife Rescue Centre, was abuzz with fanfare and festivity as numbers of families with children, college and university-going students and professionals engaged in daylong activities.

JU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Farzana Islam inaugurated the fair while Prof. Monwar Hossain, Chairman of Zoology department chaired the programme.

IMG_2168Among the daylong activities was a bird identification competition, where participants went around the campus in groups and tried to correctly identify birds on seeing them or from their calls. The department’s teachers adjudged the winners.

Two more competitions, a children’s painting competition and short lectures on birds, were held. Several telescopes and binoculars were set up at different points on the campus for a bird identification competition either visually or from their calls.

This year the fair’s organisers — the JU Department of Zoology, its Wildlife Rescue Centre presented the award, “Big Bird of the Year-2016”, for contributions in saving endangered birds. The awardees are Abdul Mozid Shah Shakil from Borisal, Soyod Md Ratul and Shahriar Roshti from Moulvibazar.

Awards were given to different stalls of the book fair in front of the Mohua Tola. A projection show comprising photographs of endangered species of birds, journals and stamps was also held there.

Among others, chairman of ‘Prokriti O Jibon Foundation’ Mr. Muqeed Majumdar Babu, founder of Bird Club Enam Ul Haque and executive officer of International Union for Conservation of Nature, Haseeb Md. Irfanullah were present the fair.
