UN to begin probe into killings of protesters

UN Human Rights Chief Volker Türk has informed Bangladesh’s interim government Chief Adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, that the UN will soon launch an investigation into the killings of protesters during the recent “student revolution.”

In a phone call on Wednesday, Türk conveyed that a team of UN experts would visit Bangladesh shortly to initiate the investigation. Professor Yunus expressed his gratitude to Türk and his long-time friend, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, for their support of the Bangladesh students’ movement and their advocacy for human rights amidst the tragic and unprecedented killings of student protesters, according to the press wing of the Chief Adviser.

Professor Yunus, a Nobel Peace Laureate from 2006, emphasized that human rights would be a fundamental principle of his administration, with the protection of every citizen being the government’s top priority. He also sought UN cooperation in rebuilding the country and promoting human rights.
