The interim government has reinstated the posthumous Independence Award that was conferred upon the late president and founder of the BNP, Ziaur Rahman.
The Cabinet Division announced this decision in a notification revealing the recipients of this year’s Independence Award on Tuesday.
The notification stated that the previous government had cancelled the posthumous Independence Award granted to the martyred president Ziaur Rahman in 2003, following a Supreme Court ruling in 2016.
However, as there was no directive to revoke the award in that ruling, the interim government has reversed the earlier decision, recognising his significant contributions to the Liberation War of 1971.
In 2016, a cabinet committee on national awards had withdrawn the award given to Ziaur Rahman, who served as a Sector Commander during the Liberation War.
The Swadhinata Padak, Bangladesh’s highest civilian honour, was established in 1977 while Ziaur Rahman was in power.
