Robi reports 1pc revenue growth for 3rd quarter

Robi Axiata Ltd., one of the leading mobile phone operators in the country, has reported a slowdown in revenue growth at 1 per cent between Q2 and Q3 for 2013. This was revealed at a press briefing, organized at Robi Corporate Office in the city on Thursday. Robi Chief Financial Officer, Mahtab Uddin Ahmed, who presented the results, attributed the growth slowdown to “lower average call rates due to heightened price competition in the market.” EBITDA (Earnings Before Income Tax Depreciation and Amortization) margins, however, improved to 40.2 per cent in part due to lower subscriber acquisition cost and improved efficiency in OPEX. “Reduction of SIM Tax only improved profitability marginally,” the CFO added.

HSBC launches Business Development Office in Uttara EPZ

The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (HSBC), Bangladesh marked expansion of its network with a new Business Development Office in Uttara EPZ ( Export Processing Zone ), Nilphamari. This is the 8th Business Development Office of HSBC Bangladesh . With this, HSBC becomes the only international bank to be present in all the eight EPZs of Bangladesh . Uttara EPZ was established in 2001. It houses a range of diversified exporters. The EPZ is attracting substantial foreign investment for the country. Telenor CEO concerned over Bangladesh political impasse

The top executive of Norwegian telecommunication giant Telenor says, he is worried over protracted political impasse regarding the next election in Bangladesh. Jon Fredrik Baksaas, president and group chief executive of Telenor ASA, which has nearly 55 percent share in Bangladesh’s largest mobile phone operator Grameenphone, told reporters in the Thai capital of Bangkok that he expected the bickering political camps would find a quick solution. “Otherwise”, he said, “A prolonged crisis will hurt foreign investment in the country. BRAC receives Healthcare Innovation Award

An innovative programme by development organisation BRAC transforming health for women and children in Dhaka’s slums has been awarded a prize in the first global GSK and Save the Children $1million Healthcare Innovation Award. BRAC is one of five organisations, from a long list of nearly 100 applications from 29 countries from across the developing world, selected to share the award. It will receive $300,000 to pilot test its programme, called Manoshi, in the slums of Freetown, Sierra Leone, where under-five and maternal mortality rates are amongst the highest in the world. Photo
