Milk, which is one of the chief sources of calcium, is highly nutritious and constitutes a part of our daily diet in some form or the other. The main constituents of milk are water, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, which are essential for growth and development.

FAO bestows BR Sen Award
FAO’s work with the Government of Bangladesh to improve food security and nutrition policy and practices has resulted in two FAO specialists receiving the Organization’s highest achievement awards in back-to-back years, FAO announced today.
Lalita Bhattacharjee, an FAO nutrition specialist working toward improvements in nutrition policy and practices in Bangladesh, has won the 2014 FAO B.R. Sen Award, while Ciro Fiorillo, an FAO manager and agricultural and development economist, has received the 2013 B.R Sen Award for exceptional leadership provided to the National Food Policy Capacity Strengthening 
10pc tax slapped on rice import: Muhith
Finance Minister AMA Muhith today (Sunday) said the government has decided to impose 10 percent tax on rice import.
The minister made the disclosure at a pre-budget meeting with the chairmenof different parliamentary standing committees at the National Economic Council Auditorium in Dhaka this afternoon.
Muhith said the decision was made for the sake of the country’s farmers.
The minister also informed that the decision will take effect today.

Farmers-friendly banking for boosting crop production
Speakers have asked the branch managers and other field staffs of Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (RAKUB) to speed up its farmers-level lending activities for boosting agricultural production to meet up the gradually increasing food demand.

Non-farm activities generate the bulk of rural income
Rural households earn more from non-farm activities than agriculture due to the low price of farm products and lack of an appropriate marketing system, a recent survey by Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics found.
Of their average annual income of Tk 91,739, 22.77 percent comes from agriculture sector and 77.23 from the non-agriculture sector, according to the Rural Credit Survey 2014.
The reason, according to Khondker Ibrahim Khaled, former chairman and managing director of Krishi Bank, was that the production cost for agriculture is much higher, which may have eaten into the incomes, the Daily Star reports.
