
Economist urges structural changes to capitalism
Noted economist Rehman Sobhan yesterday called for structural changes to the malfunctioning capitalist system to provide new opportunities to the country’s common people that have actually built the nation.
“The younger generation and leftist politicians will have to find structural solutions to the malfunctioning capitalist system to offer a new order of opportunity to the ordinary people,” Prof Sobhan said during a discussion meeting in Dhaka, the Daily Star reported.


Leather importers urge to end tax disparity
Leather chemical importers have urged the revenue authorities to end disparity in duty structure as many of the importers are misusing the bond facilities.
Bangladesh Chemical Importers and Merchants Association President M Mizanur Rahman said importers under the bonded warehouse facility are enjoying zero duty while others out of the bonded facility have to pay 25% duties and the commercial importers pay 29%.
“By using the system, a group of 20-25 bonded tanners are importing chemicals and selling them at the local market with certain amount of commission,” he alleged, reports Dhaka Tribune.

Mobile operators oppose fixed line licence change
Country’s six mobile operators have raised concerns over the government's plan to let fixed phone operators provide limited mobility services by amending their licence conditions. ADB projects 5.6pc GDP growth
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) on Tuesday projected that Bangladesh may achieve 5.6 percent GDP growth in the current fiscal against the government’s target of 7.2 percent.
However, the Finance Minister during a half yearly statement on the economy revised the target saying that it might be 6.5 percent.

Forex reserves hit new record in March
Bangladesh's foreign exchange reserves stood at an all-time high of $19.31 billion at the end of March, $160 million more than the earlier record set in February, and more than 38 percent higher than a year earlier, the central bank said on Tuesday.
The higher reserves, which stem from a widening current-account surplus, are enough to cover more than six months of imports.
At the end of March 2013, reserves totalled $13.97 billion.
