Disasters drain $13.6B from Bangladesh’s economy
Bangladesh’s vulnerability to natural disasters continues to pose significant economic challenges, with floods and tropical cyclones wreaking havoc on infrastructure, industries, and livelihoods. Between 2000 and 2023, disasters affected approximately 130 million people, inflicting an estimated US$13.6 billion in damages, hindering poverty reduction efforts and sustainable development. As climate change intensifies, experts warn that extreme weather events will become more frequent and severe, necessitating stronger financial preparedness.

CA Yunus holds emergency meeting to decide on US tariffs
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Saturday held an emergency meeting with top experts, advisers and officials, giving necessary directives to deal with the US tariff issue. Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Taouhid Hossain, High Representative to CA Dr Khalilur Rahman, Chief Adviser's Special Envoy Lutfey Siddiqi and Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Ahsan H Mansur were, among others, present at the meeting held at State Guest House Jamuna to discuss the US tariff issue, CA’s Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder told UNB.Commerce Ministry too calls emergency meeting on Trump’s tariffs
The Bangladesh Ministry of Commerce has called an urgent inter-ministerial meeting tomorrow, Sunday, to determine the course of action regarding the United States' imposition of retaliatory tariffs. The primary objective of this meeting is to review the issue of counter-tariffs and establish the next strategic steps.
This meeting will not be held in person; instead, officials from various ministries and agencies will participate virtually via a Zoom link.
CA convenes emergency meeting on US tariff at 7.30 pm
Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has convened an emergency meeting to discuss the US tariff issue at 7.30 pm today at the State Guest House Jamuna here. Top experts, advisers and officials will join the meeting, Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said.
