The Bangladesh Army has refuted recent media reports suggesting its involvement in the upcoming central student union elections at various public universities across the country.
In a statement issued by the Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) on Thursday, the Army clarified that it has not received any directive from the government to participate in election-related duties. “There is no instruction from the government for the Army to be deployed in connection with the upcoming central student union elections, nor is there any provision for such deployment in the future,” the statement read.
The Army also expressed confidence that the elections will proceed in a peaceful and festive atmosphere, under the supervision of the respective university administrations and with the support of existing law enforcement agencies.
The clarification follows speculation on social and mainstream media regarding the possible role of the military in student union polls, which are being held in several universities after years of suspension.
The Army concluded its statement by extending best wishes to all involved in the electoral process.
