Airtel Bangladesh Limited, the fastest growing telecom operator of the country has signed a corporate agreement with Innovations for Poverty Action (IPA). The agreement took place at Airtel’s head office in Tajwar Centre, Banani.
The researchers from IPA are development economists and specialists who have made front line contributions to the analysis of economic development and poverty programs. The researchers leading the Electronic Wage Payments project are Martin Kanz and Leora Klapper from the World Bank and Emily Breza from Columbia University.
IPA will randomly assign employees at selected factories to either continue collecting their wages in cash, receive them as a mobile money payment, or as a direct deposit payment into a no-frills bank account. Airtel will provide pre-paid SIM cards to selected workers in order to facilitate the use of mobile money accounts.
