Arms seized in Mizoram meant for CHT Shanti Bahini

Mizoram police officials today said that the arms seized near Lengpui, about 40 km west from here, was meant for Bangladesh insurgent group Parabatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS.)

The officials said that PCJSS, led by Santulrama, was a breakaway group of the erstwhile Shanti Bahini, a Chakma insurgent group fighting for autonomy of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, before signing accord with the Bangladesh government on December 2, 1997.

shanti bahiniThe arms seized yesterday included five modified AK-47 assault rifles, 5100 rounds of ammunition, 10 mobile phones and Rs 88,075 in cash.

Police said that the arms were suspected to be smuggled from Myanmar by five people – two of whom were members of the PCJSS from Bangladesh.

The arrested persons were, Jius Chakma (28) of Bagayasury, Rangamati District, Bangladesh, Somitro Chakam (43) of Longodu in Rangamati District, Bangladesh, Purnojoy Chakma (45) and Dipankar Chakma (33), 3), both residents of Rajiv Nagar-II Mizoram’s Mamit District, and Bijay Chakma (31), Tuipuibari of Mamit District.
