Fight against intellectual property (IP) infringement in the country can help achieve the goal to become a middle income country by 2021, said experts at a programmme today.
Intellectual Property Association of Bangladesh (IPAB) today, Saturday (June 13, 2013) launched a campaign to fight against IP infringement in the country.
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed MP inaugurated the campaign as chief guest while Anisul Haq, Mayor, South City Corporation was guest of honour.
The objectives of the campaign titled ‘RRBG-Nokol Rudhbo, Chorachalan Rukhbo, Rajossho Barabo, Desh Gorbo’– is to enhance public awareness, facilitate legal enforcement and support the government for making effective formulation of regulations in order to ensure Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) in the country.
Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed said, “Our Jamdani saree is world famous, Baul songs touches our heart. We shall hold inter-ministerial meetings to find out scope to help the IPAB’s efforts to protect intellectual property rights of our own products like Jamdani.”
“Bangladesh is going forward. We have become self-reliant in food production in the meantime. Bangladesh has surpassed India and Pakistan in some socio-economic indexes. This progress will continue in the days ahead,” he added.
The scope of the campaign is to fight against IP infringements of all products especially on counterfeiting and smuggling.
An independent research will also be carried out under this campaign to identify sector-wise impact including challenges, prospects and government’s revenue losses, so that it can measure how much the economy is being affected by IPR violation.
A publication on the outcome of the research will be published and forwarded to relevant government authorities for the greater interest of the stakeholders.
IPAB believes the successful execution of the campaign would help the economy to become a middle income nation by the year2021. Country’s 27 business sectors will work together under this campaign.
IPAB President Salahuddin Abdullah and director general Md. Azizur Rahman FCS were also present at the programmme. Representatives from 27 sectors, respective field specialists along with policy makers, legal enforcement agencies and corporate leaders were also attend the program.
