Yunus honored by Indian PM Narendra Modi
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a gold medal to honour Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus at the opening ceremony of the 102nd Indian Science Congress in Mumbai on 3 January.
Professor Yunus along with four other Nobel Laureates and five scientists from India received the gold medal during the inaugural session of the Indian Science Congress in the presence of more than 20,000 strong audience including Ministers, Chief Ministers, leading scientists, Vice Chancellors of dozens of Indian Universities and delegates from India and abroad.
WB to provide $ 500m to for riverbank improvement
The World Bank (WB) continues to show its confidence on Bangladesh government and provide another loan of USD 500 million to Bangladesh for riverbank improvement projects to prevent erosion and reduce the incidence and severity of flooding along selected sections of the Brahmaputra and Jamuna. The government earlier sought such assistance under the ongoing country assistance strategy (CAS) of the WB. In 2001, the WB provided USD 192 million for this purpose.

China has offered preferential loan to renovate the Karnaphuli Paper Mills (KPM) in Chittagong to enhance its production capacity to 30,000 metric tonnes a year.

Bangladesh left out of US GSP review
Bangladesh has not been included in the list of countries now under review of the US GSP programme that could alter their beneficiary status.
The GSP status of Bangladesh as also other countries has been suspended in June last year, following which the US authorities were reviewing the worker rights, child labour, intellectual property rights, or arbitral awards issues to consider reinstating the trade preferences.
Since the suspension of the GSP programme, a number of countries continued to be reviewed that could alter their beneficiary status, according to the latest Trade Policy Review of US by the World Trade Organisation (WTO). But in the review list Bangladesh was not included.
