Reform Bangladesh contempt of court law, say SA journos
The undersigned journalists, writers, historians and activists from South Asia (SA), are deeply concerned about the use of ‘contempt of court’ law to curb freedom of expression. The conviction and sentencing on December 2, 2014, of Dhaka-based journalist David Bergman by the International Crimes Tribunal 2 on charges of “contempt of court” for citing published research on killings during the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, is a serious set-back to Bangladesh’s commitment to free speech and independent scholarship, says a release of Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC).

53,000 fled Myanmar, Bangladesh
About 53,000 people left Bangladesh and Myanmar on treacherous smuggling boats bound for Thailand and Malaysia this year, about 540 of them dying on the journey, the UN refugee agency said Friday.
Indonesian policemen help a Rohingya Muslim from Myanmar in Banda Aceh on April 8, 2013, after they were stranded on the remote island of Pulo Aceh.
The majority are stateless Rohingya Muslims, fleeing ethnic tensions in Myanmar or poor prospects in Bangladesh, as well as Bangladeshis looking for a better life, the UNHCR said in a report.
