Passport becomes costlier
Citizens are being forced to pay more to have a passport as the authorities began charging 15 per cent value-added tax on fees from Sunday.
People who went to deposit money for new passports or renewal of their existing ones suffered a lot on the day as most of them did not have any idea that the Department of Immigration and Passport began collecting the VAT without notice, reports the daily New Age.
Branches of state-owned Sonali Bank, except Agargaon, and six other private commercial banks refused to receive fees from passport seekers on the day causing hassles to the people, service seekers alleged.

565kg illicit gold seized in Bangladesh in 2013-14

He added that low gold import duty in Bangladesh, compared to that of India, encouraged smugglers to use Bangladesh as a transit route to channel gold into India.

The Board of Investment (BoI), Bangladesh’s apex investment promotion body, yesterday signed an agreement with Japan’s largest bank to rope in investment from the Asian nation.

Tea marks 7th weekly gain on winter demand
Tea prices in Bangladesh rose for the seventh straight week at the weekly auction on Tuesday amid strong demand in the winter season.
Bangladeshi tea fetched an average 192.96 taka ($2.4) per kg compared with 192.04 taka at the previous sale, said an executive with National Brokers Ltd. The price for last week’s auction was revised from 192.15 taka.
About 2.3 million kg was offered at the auction centre in Chittagong, of which 17 percent went unsold. In the previous auction, nearly 2.3 million kg was offered, with nearly 15 percent remaining unsold...
