Most part of fund for Gorai project goes down the drain
Major irregularities and shoddy work have been detected in the Tk 9.42 billion Gorai river restoration project (phase-II), officials said.
Such irregularities have seriously undermined the main objectives of reducing salinity and ensuring higher water flow in the Gorai River, an evaluation report of the government’s Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation Division (IMED) has revealed.
Officials concerned said the salinity of the Gorai River has increased, water flow has not improved and the river erosion is continuing even after completion of the major portion of the project in last five years, the Financial Express reports.

Biman to recruit pilots to make a turnaround
National flag carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines is planning to appoint fresh pilots for the smooth operation of its flights.
“At a recent meeting, we’ve discussed the issue and asked Biman to appoint fresh pilots for its fleet,” Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Rashed Khan Menon told UNB.
The minister also said he has instructed the Biman authorities to give priority to picking pilots from local people as there is a scope for utilising some 10 cadet pilots now sitting idle.

Government plans seven-fold hike in cotton output
The government has approved a Taka 105 crore proposal, which will help annual cotton output in the country to soar seven-fold by 2018.
Currently, Bangladesh produces only 100,000 bales of cotton, which meets only 3 percent of the annual requirement of the textile mills in the country, the Daily Star reported.

Sundarbans’ honey now a forex earner
Honey collected from the Sundarbans has started earning foreign currency with its export to India from the last fiscal year.
According to the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB), honey worth about Tk20 lakh was exported to the neighbouring country in the five months from February to June of the fiscal year 2013-14, reports UNB.
Of the total, honey worth Tk three lakh was exported in February, Tk nine lakh in March, Tk five lakh in April-May and Tk one lakh in June.
