BGMEA asked to form emergency fund  

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed yesterday suggested Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association form an emergency fund to handle precarious situations like the Tuba Group workers’ payment crisis. “It is my suggestion to the BGMEA to form the fund to face any emergency,” Ahmed said at a press conference at the BGMEA office following the completion of payments to Tuba Group workers, reports Star Business. The association yesterday distributed the salaries and overtime allowances of 1,417 workers of Tuba Group on behalf of its owner Delwar Hossain. Hossain sold off his land and machineries to arrange the Tk 1.4 crore that was needed.

Canada closely watching Bangladesh Broadcast Policy

Canadian High Commissioner in Bangladesh Heather Cruden on Monday said they would continue to watch very closely the Broadcast Policy 2014 and its possible implications as Canada strongly believes in the freedom of media. “We’ll continue to watch very closely and to engage with our colleagues in the media… this is an issue we will continue to monitor very closely,” she told diplomatic correspondents at Jatiya Press Club in the city, reports UNB. The diplomat, however, said she has not yet seen an approved English version of the policy and is relying ‘very much’ on newspaper reports to understand what the possible implications can be.

Plane ‘crashes near Iranian airport’

More than 40 people were killed when a small passengers plane crashed near an airport in the Iranian capital Tehran, Iranian state media report.

Bangladesh to expand ties with Iran  

Bangladesh Ambassador to Tehran Khandakar Abdus Sattar underlined the positive and good relations between Tehran and Dhaka, and said his country spares no opportunity and efforts to further develop its relations with Iran. “Iran and Bangladesh enjoy abundant capabilities and capacities, and Bangladesh will not spare any efforts to use these capacities and capabilities (for the further expansion of the bilateral ties),” Abdus Sattar said in a meeting with Parliament Advisor Hossein Sheikholeslam in Tehran on Saturday. He also described reciprocal parliamentary visits as a major contributor to the development and consolidation of the bilateral relations between the two countries.
