2014-15 budget passed

The Jatiya Sangsad today passed the Tk 250,506 crore national budget for the 2014-15 fiscal year keeping the scope for whitening black money. The budget is the first fiscal plan of the Awami League- led grand alliance government that assumed in power through January 5 one-sided elections, reports the Daily Star. BPC concludes fuel term deals at unchanged premiums

State-owned Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) has concluded second-half 2014 term negotiations with eight companies for oil products at mostly unchanged current premiums, a senior BPC official said on Sunday. Premiums will be unchanged for all oil products other than fuel oil, said the official with the direct knowledge of the matter. Saree diplomacy between India and Bangladesh  

It is time for saree diplomacy in the South Asian region. What started of as a one –off affair a month ago between India and Pakistan, has now reached Dhaka marking the first stand alone foreign visit of Sushma Swaraj, the Indian External Affairs Minister. Former premier Khaleda Zia presented two Jamdani sarees to Swaraj at her 30-minute meeting (one of the sarees was a gift for the visiting minister’s daughter) on Friday. The Indian officials have described the Zia-Swaraj meeting as Delhi’s effort to reach out to all sections of Bangladesh society. . On Thursday the Indian minister met Prime Minister Sheik Hasina and presented a cream-coloured saree. In return Hasina gifted her famous Bangladeshi Jamdani saree.

Govt to bring back money sent abroad

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday said her government would take steps to bring back money deposited with Swiss banks by some Bangladeshis. Referring to recent media reports about deposition of money into Swiss bank accounts by Bangladeshis, she noted, “We've already taken initiatives to get the list of the depositors.
