Dhaka, Colombo to sign coastal shipping deal to boost trade

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have agreed to enhance shipping connectivity between the two countries to expand the bilateral trade and commerce. Following a seminar that was organized in connection with the first Bangladesh-Sri Lanka joint working group meeting in Dhaka, Bangladesh Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan told media Wednesday that the shipping connectivity between Dhaka and Colombo would strengthen the bilateral relations. “With the shipping connectivity, bilateral relations between the two South Asian nations would also be strengthened,” the Minister said while inaugurating the seminar on ‘Increasing maritime connectivity between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka: Reality and possibilities’.

BD’s foreign, domestic policies influenced by India: US    

While appreciating Bangladesh’s counterterrorism efforts as there had been no major terrorist incidents in 2013,  the United States in its ‘Country Reports on Terrorism 2013’ says the country’s foreign and domestic policies are heavily influenced by the region’s major powers, particularly India. “In past years, the India-Bangladesh relationship has provided openings for transnational threats, but the current government has demonstrated its interest in regional cooperation on counterterrorism” says the report released on Wednesday. Lauding its counterterrorism measures, the report says, “The (Bangladesh) government’s ongoing counterterrorism efforts have made it more difficult for transnational terrorists to operate in or use Bangladesh territory.”

Govt losing large amount in taxes as DPI providers not under tax net  

The government is losing large amount of money in taxes as many of the foreign companies are supplying products to Bangladesh directly through their local agents without being registered locally, industry insiders said. The Direct Proforma Invoice (DPI) providers running large-scale business here, but they are not under the existing income tax net. Such discriminatory policy creates uneven competition in the indenting businesses too, sources said. Registered indenters are complying with the existing tax rules and paying, both individual and corporate income tax, while DPI providers are not doing so.
