Nearly 4,000 people were abducted across Bangladesh between 2010 and 2013, according to a survey published Wednesday (April 30th) by the Dhaka Tribune.

“It’s truly astonishing that the abduction rate has gone up alarmingly since the creation of RAB (Rapid Action Battalion) in 2002, and in most cases the victims’ families say that RAB personnel wearing their trademark black dress picked up their sons or husbands,” Bangladesh National Human Rights Commission Chairman Mizanur Rahman told the channel.

Meanwhile, Human Rights Watch (HRW) called Thursday for RAB’s disbanding for its involvement in the extrajudicial killings of alleged detainees and suspects, the Daily Star reported.

State Minister for Home Affairs Assaduzzaman Khan Kamal told reporters the government has no plan to disband RAB but measures are being taken to reduce disappearances, the Ittefaq reported.
