Man sold on ‘dream job’ enslaved by Bangladesh diplomat
The top diplomat for Bangladesh’s consulate in Manhattan and his wife were socked with a lawsuit Friday for allegedly forcing their ex-servant to work for free under “slavery-like conditions” after luring him to America under the guise he’d be paid $3,000 a month.
Mashud Parves Rana, a Bangladesh native, claims in the Manhattan federal court civil-rights suit that Monirul Islam, the counsel general of Bangladesh, and his wife, Fahima Tahsina Prova, promised to pay him $3,000 per month and provide “good working conditions” if he agreed work as their servant at their swanky Manhattan home.

Indian visa regime asked to liberalize
Bangladesh on Thursday stressed the need for liberalised Indian visa regime during a meeting between its Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque and his Indian counterpart Sujatha Singh as they discussed key bilateral issues including long-pending Teesta water-sharing agreement.
“All bilateral issues - trade and investment opportunities between the two countries, border management, security, water issues and need for improved connectivity in the regional context were discussed,” official sources said here said.
Press freedom waning in Bangladesh
A recent report published by the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) observed that the dividing line between politics and journalism is “more blurred than ever” in Bangladesh. The report identified nine countries, Bangladesh among them, as experiencing a decline in press freedoms. It noted that journalists in Bangladesh were “attacked from all sides” during the political turmoil of 2013. The report further pointed out the conflict dates back to the country’s secession from Pakistan in 1971.

Tea prices plunge again on poor quality
Tea prices in Bangladesh plunged for a sixth straight week at a weekly auction on Tuesday, because of larger supplies of end-of-season inferior quality leaf, brokers said.
Bangladeshi tea fetched an average of 125.85 taka ($1.6) per kg at the auction, sharply down from 144.19 taka in the previous week's sale, said an official from National Brokers Limited.

Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC celebrated the 94th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the National Children’s Day on Monday (17 March 2014) in an eventful manner. The elaborate programme included drawing and essay writing competition for the children, a discussion meeting on life and works of Bangabandhu and prayers. Messages from Hon'ble President, Hon'ble Prime Minister and Hon'ble Foreign Minister on the said occassion were also read out. Embassy family, a large number children and representaives from the community were present on the occasion.

Primark to pay $ 10m more to Rana Plaza victims
British clothes retailer Primark will pay a further $10 million in compensation to victims of the collapse of a Bangladeshi factory last year that killed more than 1,100 people.
