Widespread safety issues identified at BD RMG factories

Inspectors hired by a group of Western clothing brands have found safety problems at all the Bangladesh factories they visited as part of an initiative launched after a building collapse last year killed more than 1,100 workers. The Accord for Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh is seeking remedial action after identifying more than 80,000 safety issues, while the country’s $22 billion garment industry grapples with slowing export growth as buyers turn to India, Myanmar, Vietnam and Cambodia because of concerns over workshop safety, higher wages and political instability.

BPC joint letter commending alliance for worker safety

The Alliance for Bangladesh Worker Safety (Alliance) has made great progress toward protecting workers and improving garment factory safety, say former Senators George Mitchell (D-ME), Co-founder of the Bipartisan Policy Center (BPC), and Olympia Snowe (R-ME), BPC Senior Fellow, in a letter issued by the BPC to Alliance Independent Chair Ellen Tauscher. The BPC, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank actively promoting bipartisanship and respectful dialogue, helped give rise to the Alliance in 2013 through a series of discussions convened by Senators Mitchell and Snowe. The non-profit was instrumental in laying out the aggressive timeline and milestones for the Alliance’s five-year effort.

Bangladesh global apparel export share to go up 1pc by 2020

Retail Holdings announces first half results

BGMEA asked to form emergency fund  

Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed yesterday suggested Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association form an emergency fund to handle precarious situations like the Tuba Group workers’ payment crisis. “It is my suggestion to the BGMEA to form the fund to face any emergency,” Ahmed said at a press conference at the BGMEA office following the completion of payments to Tuba Group workers, reports Star Business. The association yesterday distributed the salaries and overtime allowances of 1,417 workers of Tuba Group on behalf of its owner Delwar Hossain. Hossain sold off his land and machineries to arrange the Tk 1.4 crore that was needed.
