Competition Act key to fair markets

Says Commission Chief

Effective enforcement of the Competition Act 2012 is essential for safeguarding consumer interests, curbing anti-competitive practices, and ensuring sustainable economic growth, Bangladesh Competition Commission Chairperson A.H.M. Ahsan said on Thursday.

Speaking at a policy consultation hosted by the Foreign Investors’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Ahsan emphasised that the Act serves as a foundation for a fair and transparent marketplace.

“The Competition Act is a cornerstone of a healthy free-market economy. It empowers the Commission to act against cartels and syndicates, protect consumers, and promote investment. Strong enforcement will drive innovation, create employment opportunities, and support long-term economic growth,” he stated.

The consultation, titled “Competition Act 2012 and the Functions of the Bangladesh Competition Commission”, was held at FICCI’s conference hall. It brought together senior Commission officials, FICCI Board Member Sumitava Basu, and representatives of nearly 200 member companies.

FICCI President Zaved Akhtar, who chaired the session, reaffirmed the Chamber’s support for market fairness. FICCI represents leading companies across 21 sectors from 35 countries. Our members are committed to fair competition and a level playing field. We believe in a strong and effective law that protects both businesses and consumers, while ensuring regulatory measures do not inadvertently restrain growth, he said.

The discussion, moderated by FICCI Executive Director T.I.M. Nurul Kabir, featured constructive exchanges on the enforcement of the Act and potential amendments. Participants highlighted the need for greater regulatory clarity, stronger enforcement capacity, and closer dialogue between the Commission and industry to balance fair competition with business facilitation.
