Ex BRACU lecturer Asif Mahtab in DB Custody

Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB) has detained former BRAC University lecturer Asif Mahtab and Nusrat Tabassum, another coordinator of the quota reform movement. The announcement was made by Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid, the Additional Commissioner and Head of the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, in a press conference at the Minto Road DB office on Sunday, July 28.

Harun-or-Rashid stated that Nusrat, Asif, and three other individuals were brought into DB custody for security reasons, and assured their families that there is no cause for concern.

According to reports, Nusrat Tabassum was taken by detectives from a relative’s house in the Rupnagar residential area of Mirpur early on Sunday morning, while Asif Mahtab was picked up from his Uttara residence around 1 am on Saturday, July 27.

Previously, on Saturday evening, Sarjis Alam and Hasnat Abdullah, two coordinators of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, which is associated with the quota reform movement, were also taken into custody by the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police. On Friday afternoon, three more coordinators, Nahid Islam, Asif Mahmud, and Abu Bakar, were detained from Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital for security reasons.

All five coordinators currently in DB custody are students of Dhaka University.
