Govt to ban Jamaat, Shibir, gazette notification soon

Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq on Thursday announced that the gazette notification banning Jamaat-e-Islami and all its front organizations will be published shortly.

“I think the Home Ministry will publish the gazette notification in this regard shortly. The government decided to ban Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Chhatra Shibir, and all their front organizations in line with section 18/1 of the Anti Terrorism Act,” the minister stated during a press briefing at the ministry this noon, reports BSS.

Minister Anisul Huq, a senior jurist, mentioned that the home ministry, after fulfilling all legal obligations, sent the matter to the law ministry. “They sent the matter to the legislative division of the Law Ministry this morning, and we sent it back to the Home Ministry after vetting,” he added.

Previously, on July 30, the minister had indicated that Jamaat would be banned by July 31, explaining, “When you ban any party, you have to do it through an executive order. I would hold a meeting with the Home Minister in this regard a little later and would take a decision on legal ways to do this.”

Anisul Huq emphasized that the law and order situation in the country would improve significantly if Jamaat and Shibir are banned.

Responding to concerns about creating new issues amid the ongoing movement, the law minister asserted that the government has evidence that the violence from July 16, purportedly in the name of the quota reform movement, is being orchestrated by members of Jamaat, Shibir, BNP, and Chhatra Dal.

The minister’s comments came a day after the Awami League-led 14-party alliance unanimously recommended banning Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir.
