A Dhaka court on Tuesday imposed a travel ban on Sheikh Hasina and her family members, including Tulip Siddiq, a Labour MP of the UK, in connection with allegations of embezzlement related to the construction of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP).
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed a petition requesting the travel ban granted by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain Galib.
The individuals affected by the ban include Hasina’s son, Sajib Ahmed Wazed Joy; her daughter, Saima Wazed Putul; her younger sister, Sheikh Rehana; and Rehana’s children, Radwan Mujib Siddique, Tulip Siddique, and Azmina Siddique.
The petition states that the ACC is investigating allegations of embezzlement amounting to approximately Tk 59,000 crore in connection with the RNPP’s construction. A five-member investigation team has been established to look into these allegations and prepare a report.
During the investigation, the ACC discovered through reliable sources that the individuals implicated in the allegations were attempting to leave the country secretly with their families. The ACC expressed concern that if they were to flee abroad, it would hinder the collection of crucial evidence related to the case.
The ACC stated, “Therefore, it is essential to impose a travel ban on them to ensure a fair investigation into the allegations against the individuals named.”
It is worth noting that all the individuals mentioned in the petition have already left the country.
