Hasina’s asylum status uncertain amidst reports, rumours

Even 48 hours after Sheikh Hasina fled Dhaka and arrived in India, the final destination of the former Prime Minister remains uncertain amidst conflicting reports and speculations.

Indian media sources indicate that with asylum options in the UK and USA currently unavailable, Sheikh Hasina is exploring other possibilities. According to The Hindu, her attempt to seek political asylum in the UK has already failed, prompting her to consider alternatives such as the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Finland.

Contradicting these reports, her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, stated that Sheikh Hasina has not sought asylum in any country. Speaking to NDTV, Joy clarified that his mother might be traveling to locations where family members reside, including the USA, UK, Finland, and India. He further noted that he is currently in Washington, his aunt is in London, and his sister lives in Delhi, which adds to the uncertainty about Sheikh Hasina’s exact whereabouts.

The Times of India also echoed this sentiment, suggesting that Sheikh Hasina could travel to countries where her relatives live. This includes the USA, UK, Finland, and India.

Adding to the confusion, CNN’s affiliate News 18 cited sources from the Bangladeshi opposition on Monday, claiming that the USA has canceled Sheikh Hasina’s visa. However, the US government has not yet commented on the validity of this assertion.

It was reported on Tuesday that Sheikh Hasina would remain in India for a few more days, though it is still unclear how long she will be permitted to stay in New Delhi.

Sheikh Hasina, who serves as the president of the Awami League, was compelled to step down and leave Bangladesh following a massive public movement, bringing an end to her 15 and a half years in power.

As the situation develops, uncertainty continues to loom over Sheikh Hasina’s next steps and her potential asylum destinations.
