BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman stressed that the failure of the interim government would be a failure for all pro-democracy forces in Bangladesh. Tarique stated today that the country will move towards an election roadmap through a series of reform programs. Addressing a rally in Nayapaltan, Dhaka, he emphasized the need for these reforms to aim at creating an accountable government and a parliament genuinely elected by the people. Tarique stressed that no democracy or reform can be sustainable without political empowerment and the direct involvement of the populace.
He mentioned that while some may criticize the government’s performance, it is essential to prevent its failure, as the interim administration is restoring order following the end of Sheikh Hasina’s regime.
He highlighted the importance of voters having the right to freely elect their representatives through fair and impartial elections. While acknowledging that the interim government has made progress in some areas, Tarique warned that failing to prioritize key issues could give conspirators a chance to disrupt the progress made by the people’s uprising.
Despite Hasina’s departure, Tarique noted that some beneficiaries of her government are still posing challenges from within the administration or under the guise of politics. He expressed confidence that the people will not let the government fail despite both domestic and international provocations.
Tarique reminded the BNP members that the current interim government is the result of the sacrifices of thousands of martyrs and the mass uprising. He urged his party to win the trust and support of the people through dedicated work, as the country moves along the path of reforms and towards elections.
The rally was organized by BNP in observance of International Day of Democracy, with Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir presiding.
