Nobel Laureate in Economics, Joseph E. Stiglitz delivered his speech at an international assembly titled “Formulating a Work Strategy, Free Opinion and Unsolicited Interference in Journalism”, according to a press release received from The Asian Age on Saturday (25 October 2025).

Joseph E. Stiglitz speaks in a three-day-long event held in the Austrian capital, Vienna, from October 23 to 25, organised by the International Press Institute (IPI). In his address, he talked about the value of public interest journalism for the benefit of healthy, democratic societies in an age of authoritarianism, disinformation and artificial intelligence.
Joseph Stiglitz also underlined that the suppression of dissent and obstruction of news publication do not serve as characteristics of a civilised society. Representatives from media organisations across 100 countries participated in the dialogue. Joseph Stiglitz is an American economist and a Professor at Columbia University. He is the chief economist of the Roosevelt Institute. Stiglitz was awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics in 2001. He is a former Chief Economist of the World Bank. In 2011, Time magazine named Stiglitz as one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
The program included multiple sessions and seminars focusing on critical issues such as freedom of expression, press freedom, the negative impacts of artificial intelligence and strategies for countering harassment against journalists, the press release concludes.
