The government of Bangladesh is set to ban Jamaat-e-Islami through an executive order by tomorrow, announced Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq on Monday.
“The Prime Minister has ordered me to take steps in this regard by tomorrow. When you ban any party, you have to do it through an executive order. I would hold a meeting with the Home Minister in this regard a little later and would take a decision on legal ways to do this,” Minister Huq stated while addressing the press at the ministry.
Minister Huq expressed confidence that the country’s law and order situation will improve once Jamaat and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, are banned.
When questioned about potential complications arising from banning Jamaat and Shibir amidst the ongoing movement, the law minister responded that the government possesses evidence linking the recent violence, which began on July 16 under the guise of the quota reform movement, to Jamaat, Shibir, BNP, and Chhatra Dal activists.
The announcement comes a day after the Awami League-led 14-party alliance unanimously recommended the ban of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir.
