Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan Sardar Ayaz Sadiq today exchanged greetings with Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar here ahead of the funeral programme of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

Millions attend Khaleda Zia’s janaza

Millions of people from across Bangladesh attended the namaz-e-janaza of BNP Chairperson and three-time former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia at Manik Mia Avenue in the capital.

The Janaza began around 3:00 pm, while the coffin wrapped in the national flag was brought to the venue around 2:45 pm with full state honour. Standing Committee Member of BNP, Nazrul Islam Khan, read out a brief biography of the late leader while Baitul Mukarram National Mosque Khatib Mufti Mohammad Abdul Malek conducted the funeral prayers.

Concerns over licence compliance in Sirajganj

Allegations of corruption and mismanagement have triggered unrest among rice traders and mill owners in Sirajganj, following reported moves by food department officials to enlist a controversial auto rice mill as a government supplier despite alleged non-compliance with procurement and environmental rules.

Local traders claim that the District Food Controller, in coordination with the Raiganj Upazila Food Officer, has initiated steps to include Riya Auto Rice Mill of Chandaikona in the government procurement list, allegedly justifying the move by citing a pending High Court case. Critics, however, argue that the mill does not meet mandatory eligibility criteria.

Khaleda: Daughter of democracy dies at 80

Thrice-former prime minister and icon of democracy, Begum Khaleda Zia, passed away Tuesday morning while under treatment at the capital’s Evercare Hospital. She was 80. The chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) breathed her last at 6am on Tuesday, according to A.K.M.
