LGED graft trail leads to Tk 300cr scandal

Allegations have surfaced that three influential figures within the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) turned the organisation into a hub of corruption and irregularities prior to the appointment of the current Chief Engineer (routine charge), Md. Anwar Hossain. Army acts on tribunal orders, one officer still at large

The Army Headquarters has confirmed that 15 of the officers named in arrest warrants issued by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) have been taken into custody, while one remains missing. According to the army, Major General Kabir Ahmed has been “illegally absent” from duty.

The issue has drawn widespread discussion following the tribunal’s issuance of arrest warrants in enforced disappearance cases and growing frustration among July uprising supporters over the delay in arrests. At a press briefing held on Saturday at Mess Alpha in Dhaka Cantonment, the Army’s Adjutant General, Major General Md Hakimuzzaman, disclosed the information.

Syed Manzoorul Islam no more

Eminent academic and writer Syed Manzoorul Islam, emeritus professor of English at the University of Dhaka, has passed away. He was 74. He breathed his last at 5 pm today (10 October), while undergoing treatment at LabAid Hospital in the capital, the hospital's Public Relations Officer Chowdhury Meher-e-Khoda confirmed to The Business Standard. According to hospital sources, Manzoorul Islam suffered a heart attack last Friday (3 October) and was admitted to the hospital, where he underwent stenting. He was later placed on life support.
