Brigadier General (Retd) Sakhawat Hossain, Adviser to the Ministry of Home Affairs, announced today that an initiative has been launched to draft legislation regulating how political parties can operate within the country. “Political parties that adhere to this new law will be allowed to continue their activities. Those who do not comply will be prohibited from participating in politics,” he stated at a press briefing at the Secretariat on 11 August.
He revealed that a draft is already in the works and will be reviewed with relevant authorities before any further steps are taken.
Additionally, the Home Affairs Adviser warned that any police officers who fail to report for duty by the upcoming Thursday will be considered as having resigned. “Everything that has occurred in recent days will be thoroughly investigated, and the judiciary will make decisions based on the findings,” he assured.
Sakhawat Hossain urged the public not to fear, stating, “No innocent person will be harmed.” He also emphasized the importance of law enforcement, advising the public, “Do not attack the police. Their role is crucial, whether it’s to prevent or respond to crimes. Please understand their necessity.”
He also issued a stern warning against extortion, indicating that anyone involved in such activities would face severe consequences. This matter, he said, had already been discussed with the Army chief.
Referring to a political party linked to Bangabandhu and the history of the independence struggle, he expressed concern over its current disarray, accusing its members of taking advantage of the country’s critical situation. “This must stop. I’ve received reports of extortion in Karwan Bazar and an attempt to take control of a bank through violence. Such actions will not be tolerated,” he declared.
In closing, Sakhawat Hossain urged the public to resist extortion attempts, saying, “If someone demands money from you, do not hesitate to take action against them.”
