President, PM pays homage to war heroes

Marking the 45th Independence and National Day, president Abdul Hamid and prime minister Sheikh Hasina paid tributes to the martyrs of the liberation war by placing wreaths at the national memorial on Thursday morning.

President Hamid placed a wreath first at the altar of the memorial followed by the prime minister around 6:00am.

After placing the wreaths, the president and the prime minister stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of profound respect to the memories of the martyrs of the 1971 liberation war.

Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, ministers, advisers, parliament members, chiefs of the three services, freedom fighters, diplomats and high civil and military officials were present on the occasion. Later, flanked by senior leaders of the party, Sheikh Hasina, also the president of Bangladesh Awami League, laid another wreath at the National Memorial on behalf of her party.

Besides, Speaker Shirin Sharmin and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament Begum Raushan Ershad placed wreaths at the National Memorial and paid their deep homage to the martyrs.

Many organisations in Dhaka and elsewhere in the country are scheduled to hold programmes to observe the day.

Non-resident Bangladeshis in different countries around the world, too, have chalked out various programme to mark the day.

The national flag is hoisted atop government and private buildings. The government and semi-government buildings and other public places are illuminated on the occasion.

The President is set to visit military hardware exhibition at the National Parade Ground in Dhaka at 10.30am.

President Hamid will host a reception at Bangabhaban at 4:45pm.

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina also attended a rally of children and juveniles at Bangabandhu National Stadium at 8:30am.
