Attack on UNO

Prime suspect Asadul admits involvement

He says they intended to rob the UNO’s house

Rapid Action Battalion on Friday said they are still not sure of any motive behind the hammer attack on Ghoraghat Upazila Nirbahi Officer Wahida Khanam and her father but prime suspect Asadul Haque claimed that they intended to rob the place.

“Asadul said their motive was to loot valuables from the UNO’s house,” Rab-13 Commanding Officer Reza Ahmed Ferdous told reporters at a press briefing in the evening.

The Rab official however said this was simply Asadul’s claim and they do not have sufficient information to make a conclusive statement on the matter.

Rab arrested Asadul (35) on Thursday and based on his information, they arrested two house-painters Nabirul Islam (34) and Shantu Kumar Biswas (28) yesterday. Asadul told Rab, Nabirul carried out the attack.

The Rab official also added that the detainees admitted their involvement to the crimes. Rab also recovered a red t-shirt from the spot which Asadul said he was wearing during the incident.

“After checking their profiles, we got to know that Asadul and Nabirul are accused in multiple cases, including theft,” Reza Ahmed Ferdous said.

Rab had earlier interrogated two ruling party leaders including Ghoraghat Jubo League Convener Jahangir Alam, Ghoraghat’s Singra Union Jubo League President Masud Rana and night guard Nahid Hossain Palash.

“After interrogation, we let Jahangir go,” the Rab official said.

Responding to repeated questions from journalists whether there were any political links, Rab said they are still investigating the incident and cannot share any further information.
