Scuffles over land grabbing in enclaves

Days after Parliament ratified the land swap agreement with Bangladesh, there are reports of “law and order” problem over the alleged land grabbing in the Indian enclaves in Bangladesh.

bd-indiaIt has been learnt that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee rang up Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to take steps to maintain peace in the Indian enclaves. Accordingly, the Bangladesh administration was contacted by the Prime Minister’s Office and was requested to take necessary action.

The local administration of both the countries, however, claimed that land and order problems are being “created by a group of smugglers and land mafias” who are against the land boundary agreement.

Speaking to The Sunday Express from Kurigram district in Bangladesh, Golam Mostafa, the secretary of Indo-Bangla Enclave exchange coordination committee (Bangladesh Chapter), said: “On Friday evening, a scuffle was reported between two groups in an Indian enclave in Kurigram district of Bangladesh and the news spread in all the enclaves in Kurigram and Lalmonirhat districts. The rumour was spread in such a manner that people started thinking of a probable riot-like situation in the area. However, the matter was sorted out.”
