The family members of eight people who had disappeared this time last year from the city’s Shahinbagh and Bashundhara area, allegedly after being picked up by law enforcers, demanded to know their whereabouts and asked the government to return them.

The prospects of implementing India’s Land Boundary Agreement (LBA) with Bangladesh brightened today with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee throwing her behind the deal saying “the problem will be solved soon”.

A mechanism needs to be developed to keep tabs on the movement of cargo vessels from Bangladesh to Kolkata as part of the Indo-Bangladesh trade protocol, the Navy feels. After necessary formalities at Hemnagar on the Indo-Bangladesh border, the vessels - which are actually large barges - pass through the fringe of the Sundarbans to Namkhana and northward to Budge Budge and Kolkata.

As part of its graft prevention activities, the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) for the first time is going to hold public hearings on graft allegations at Muktagacha upazila in Mymensingh, aiming to making public servants accountable to people and thus check the growing graft at the grassroots level.

November remittances up 10pc year-on-year
Money sent home by Bangladeshis working overseas in November rose 10 percent from a year earlier to $1.17 billion, the central bank said on Tuesday.
In July-November, the first five months of the 2014-15 financial year, Bangladesh received $6.19 billion in remittances, up 11 percent from the same period of previous year.
