The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Skills and Employment Programme of Bangladesh (SEP-B) to provide vocational training to the RMG workers to improve their productivity, the Dhaka Tribune reported.
Under the MoU, which aims at developing private sector-led vocational training systems for the RMG sector between BGMEA and SEP-B, financial support will be extended to the industry-led initiatives for developing and implementing vocational training system in Bangladesh.
The development activities of the Centre of Excellence for Bangladesh Apparel Industry (CEBAI) will be implemented under this deal, as SEP-B will also provide technical support. The Centre of Excellence is an initiative supported by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the Government of Sweden, the leading Swedish fashion retailer Hennes and Mauritz (H&M) and the BGMEA.
During the signing ceremony, BGMEA President Atiqul Islam said that there is no alternative to enhance workers skills to witness a robust growth in the export of garment products.
Bangladeshi garment sector is going ahead with an aim of reaching $50 billion export at the 50th anniversary of Independence of Bangladesh. To reach this goal, efficiencies of RMG workers should be enhanced so that they can contribute their best to fulfil the target, he added.
CEBAI has been established considering the fast growing industry and envisaging the potential expansion of RMG market in the next 5-10 years. He said Bangladesh needed a platform that can demonstrate and implement the initiatives and make the best practices for the industry in terms of all sorts of skill development and research.
The SEP-B project is an initiative of the Government of Bangladesh funded by the Government of Canada and executed by the ILO. SEP-B is financed by UKAID through its department for Department for International Development (DFID) and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation. The RMG sector is one of the focused sectors of SEP-B to establish integrated, market-driven, skill-training models that will enhance higher productivity, efficiency and investment among the trainees.
