We must safeguard this newfound independence: Dr Yunus

Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus emphasized the importance of restoring law and order in the country and urged that no harm be inflicted on anyone. “Place your trust in me,” he appealed, referring to the mass uprising led by students and the public as the “second independence.” He stated, “We must safeguard this newfound independence.”

Dr. Yunus arrived in Dhaka from Paris today, Thursday, at approximately 2:10 pm. Upon his arrival at the airport, he was greeted by Chief of Army Staff General Waker-Uz-Zaman and other officials.

Expressing his pride, Professor Yunus said, “Today is a day of pride for us. We must carry forward the victory that the youth achieved through their revolution. I am deeply grateful to the young people who made this possible. They have protected Bangladesh and given it a new beginning.” He then emotionally recalled Abu Sayeed, describing him as an “unbelievably courageous youth,” and shed tears in his memory.

Addressing the students, Dr. Yunus stressed the importance of preserving this independence and ensuring that its benefits reach everyone. “Independence means that the country is in your hands. You have the power to shape it as you see fit. Embrace the new and utilize your creativity,” he urged.

Dr. Yunus also criticized the government, stating that it had turned into a tool of repression, which a government should never be. “People should feel proud of their government, one that protects them,” he said, condemning the ongoing attacks on minorities and others. “It is our duty to protect everyone—every person is our brother or sister. Disorder is our greatest enemy, and restoring law and order is our top priority.”

In his appeal to the nation, Dr. Yunus said, “If you trust in me, no one will be harmed. Protect everyone from violence and disorder, and ensure that anarchy does not take root.”

The interim government is set to be sworn in tonight around 8:00 pm. In a press conference on Wednesday, Army Chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman mentioned that the interim government is expected to include 21 members.
