Interim Government Chief Adviser Dr. Yunus sought the British government’s assistance in recovering the money that has been smuggled from Bangladesh to the UK while British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Sarah Cook, met him at the State Guest House Jamuna.
Following the meeting, the Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam, briefed journalists at the Foreign Service Academy.
Shafiqul Alam stated, “We are aware, through various global institutions, that during Sheikh Hasina’s government, a large amount of money was smuggled out of Bangladesh. A significant number of people have purchased properties in the UK with this money. Dr. Yunus has sought the British government’s cooperation in bringing back this huge amount of smuggled money.”
He also mentioned that the government intends to use the recovered funds to rebuild the country.
On Wednesday, besides British High Commissioner Sarah Cook, Japanese Ambassador Iwama Kiminori also paid a courtesy visit to the Chief Adviser.
