
Employment slows down as investments sluggish
Employment in the formal sector has slowed down considerably in the past one year because of sluggish private and public investments against the backdrop of prolonged political unrest over the holding of the general elections.
‘It is obvious that the unemployment rate has increased,’ said former caretaker government adviser Mirza Azizul Islam.
One cannot expect an increase in employment without new investments, he said, adding that the main reason for the growing unemployment was the lacklustre private investments.

Measles- rubella vaccination campaign begins
The first ever biggest measles- rubella vaccination campaign began across the country today with a target of brining about 5.20 crore children aged between nine months and 15 years under the programme.
Health and Family Welfare Ministry sources said the programme will continue till February 13.
"The programme is being implemented at a cost of Taka 512.70 crore," said Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammad Nasim following inauguration of the programme at the ministry's conference room on Wednesday, reports BSS.

IAF awarded EU funded Bangladesh project
The International Apparel Federation (IAF) has been granted an EU funded project together with its two association members BKMEA (The Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association) and HCIA (The Hellenic Clothing Industry Association).
The project is aimed at capacity building, network extension and knowledge transfer. As a result this project BKMEA and HCIA will be able to better service the companies that are their members by having gained more international contacts, more knowledge and more insights.

Bangladesh intends to buy cotton from Kyrgyzstan
Bangladesh has intended to buy cotton from Kyrgyzstan, Mosud Mannan, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Bangladesh to Kyrgyzstan with residence in Tashkent, said while presenting his credentials to the President of the Kyrgyz Republic Almazbek Atambayev.
“Kyrgyzstan is a producer of cotton, and Bangladesh is the second-largest clothing producer in the world, next to China. Therefore, Bangladesh has a large demand for high quality cotton, and we hope to develop our business relationship in this direction,” Mannan said.
