Bangladesh urges UK to allow garment imports

Bangladesh clothing exports to Europe jumped 24 percent in 2015, with the UK being the EU’s second biggest garment export destination for the country after Germany. But the government of the UK has banned imported clothing from Bangladesh due to its concern that there is a lack UK_BDof proper security measures at the Bangladesh Airport in Dhaka.

Now the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association is calling on its government to take the necessary steps to ensure that the ban on air cargo from Dhaka is lifted, soon. The BGMEA president, Md. Siddiqur Rahman, said the ban would harm the industry due to the volume of exports going to the UK. He is asking his government to hold discussions with the UK government to resolve the issue.

Some shipments of garments are making it into the UK by way of transit cargo, as long as the shipments were re-screened before continuing on to the UK. However this drives up cost and the time it takes to reach the final destination.
