UN warns Ethiopia landslide casualties could climb to 500

The Guardian: The death toll from landslides that hit south-western Ethiopia on Sunday and Monday has risen to 257 and could reach 500, the UN’s office for humanitarian affairs (OCHA) says. Heavy rains in the mountainous Gofa zone caused a landslide on Sunday night, followed by a second on Monday morning that trapped people who were rescuing victims of the first. The death toll stood at 229 on Tuesday, according to Ethiopia’s national disaster risk management commission. At least 125 people have been displaced and 12 injured, OCHA said in an update on Thursday. Dhaka elevated expressway to remain shut

Mobile internet likely to be restored by July 29: Palak

Staff Reporter: State Minister for Posts, Telecommunications and ICT Zunaid Ahmed Palak said that mobile internet services will be restored by July 29. But access to social media sites, including Facebook, will be restricted. He briefs the media at the BTRC building in Agargaon on Wednesday. Palak said that the government has been working to restore the internet services as quickly as possible. “By tonight, full broadband internet services will be available at homes," he added.
