To create awareness about resolution of commercial disputes outside court system through mediation, Bangladesh International Arbitration Centre (BIAC) in collaboration with Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) organized a Workshop on Commercial Mediation today 11th March, 2015 at DCCI Auditorium.
Businesses require fast and effective tools for resolving disputes. In keeping with the established practice in the developed and major developing countries, Bangladesh government has already brought about a number of amendments in a few important laws, incorporating provisions of mandatory mediation in civil and money loan cases. These provisions cannot be implemented in the absence of people’s awareness about the benefits of alternative dispute resolution methods- particularly mediation. BIAC is committed to providing to our businesses required infrastructure and facilities to take advantage of the above mentioned amendments. This Workshop is a manifestation of BIAC’s commitment in this respect.
In the workshop, BIAC Chairman Mahbubur Rahman observed that, for entrepreneurship in trade and investment to flourish, we require an enabling framework. One key requirement is quick and cost-effective methods to resolve commercial and investment disputes. However, in regards to Bangladesh, we have a long way to go. To aid this journey, BIAC has developed facilities and professionals who are highly qualified and trained by world renowned institutions. BIAC is the first and only institution in Bangladesh that provides physical facilities for mediation and arbitration and organizes professional training in arbitration and mediation.
