BNP to give govt  time to ensure fair polls: Mirza Fakhrul

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said his party is open to providing a reasonable timeframe to the interim government to oversee a general election. “We want to give the government time, but they must bring all political parties to a position of trust,” Fakhrul said during a press interaction in Sylhet on Sunday afternoon.
Earlier in the Sunday, Mirza Fakhrul visited the shrines of Hazrat Shahjalal and Shah Paran.
He advised the interim government not to be discouraged by the demands of the BNP, underscoring that the party’s objective is to ensure a fair and credible election.
In his address, Fakhrul also criticized former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, saying she is widely disliked by the majority of the population.
He accused Hasina of misleading the Bangladeshi people through various tactics.
Furthermore, Fakhrul claimed that India is attempting to exert control over Bangladesh by using the water of shared rivers as a strategic tool.
BNP Secretary General said, from 1972 to 1975, they were in power without public support, as a result of which they killed democracy and established Baxal and started a one-party rule in the country. This time too they had finalized the preparations for one-party governance. But it could not be implemented due to the resistance of the general students of the country. People could not speak out for fear of digital security laws. Journalists and mass media were suppressed by this law. Now people have regained freedom of speech. We will repeal this Digital Security Act if we get the responsibility of running the country.
He said that many people, including Sylhet journalist Abu Turab, were martyred by the police in this revolution of the students. We pray for their souls to rest in peace.
Mirza Fakhrul said, we have been fighting since 2012. Since then, about 700 of our people have gone missing, about 2,000 leaders and activists have been martyred. About 1 lakh 45 thousand disappearance cases have been filed, in these cases 60 lakh BNP leaders and activists have been made defendants.
He also said that the national leader Begum Khaleda Zia was freed through the movement, she never surrendered. Numerous false cases have been filed against our Tariq Rahman. We are trying to deal with it legally. We m. We are very concerned about all those who are missing, including Elias Ali, a UN investigation team has also arrived. We are now confident we will get the correct information. The government has not yet said anything specific. We want to know clearly about their position.
