Govt lifts ban on Jamaat, Shibir

The interim government on Wednesday lifted the ban on Jamaat-e- Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir. "It (lifting of the ban) will come under effect immediately," the home ministry said in a gazette notification. The notification said the ban slapped on August 1, 2024 under the Anti-Terrorism Act 2009 was lifted as there was no particular evidence and neither the government believed that Jamaat and its associate bodies including the Chhatra Shibir are involved in terrorist activities and violence. The notification was signed by home ministry's senior secretary Mohammad Abdul Momen. 5-member commission to detect force disappearance

The government has formed a five-member Commission to find out forcibly disappeared people by the law enforcement agencies from January 1, 2010 to August 5, 2024. Retired judges of the High Court Division Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Farid Ahmed Shibli have been made president and member of the Commission. Other members of the Commission are: human rights activist Nur Khan, BRAC University teacher Nabila Idris and human rights activist Sazzad Hossain. The Commission has been given 45 working days to summit the investigation report to the government.

UK to help reform sectors like banking, revenue, capital markets

The United Kingdom (UK) today expressed their keen interest to help Bangladesh reform its banking and revenue sectors alongside the capital market.
