Rhymester Sukumar Barua passes away

Bangla Academy Award and Ekushey Padak-winning renowned rhymester Sukumar Barua passed away today at the age of 88.

Sukumar Barua breathed his last at a private hospital in Raozan Upazila of Chattogram this morning.  His daughter Anjana Barua confirmed the death, saying he had been undergoing treatment for a week after fluid accumulated in his lungs. Despite medical efforts, he could not be saved.

Millions attend Khaleda Zia’s janaza

Millions of people from across Bangladesh attended the namaz-e-janaza of BNP Chairperson and three-time former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia at Manik Mia Avenue in the capital.

The Janaza began around 3:00 pm, while the coffin wrapped in the national flag was brought to the venue around 2:45 pm with full state honour. Standing Committee Member of BNP, Nazrul Islam Khan, read out a brief biography of the late leader while Baitul Mukarram National Mosque Khatib Mufti Mohammad Abdul Malek conducted the funeral prayers.

Syed Manzoorul Islam no more

Eminent academic and writer Syed Manzoorul Islam, emeritus professor of English at the University of Dhaka, has passed away. He was 74. He breathed his last at 5 pm today (10 October), while undergoing treatment at LabAid Hospital in the capital, the hospital's Public Relations Officer Chowdhury Meher-e-Khoda confirmed to The Business Standard. According to hospital sources, Manzoorul Islam suffered a heart attack last Friday (3 October) and was admitted to the hospital, where he underwent stenting. He was later placed on life support.

Veteran intellectual Badruddin Umar dies at 94

Eminent writer, researcher, and leftist intellectual Badruddin Umar passed away on Sunday morning at Bangladesh Specialised Hospital due to age-related complications. He was 94.

According to Jatiya Mukti Council Secretary Foyzul Hakim, Umar had been hospitalised on 22 July with shortness of breath and low blood pressure. He received treatment for 10 days before being discharged last week but fell seriously ill again and was pronounced dead at 10:05 am.

Former DU VC Prof Arefin Siddique dies

Former Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University (DU), Professor Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique passed away at a hospital in the city tonight. He was 72. "He (Arefin)breathed his last at 10:45pm while undergoing treatment at the Neurosurgery Department of Ibrahim Cardiac Hospital," his brother Saifullah Siddique told media.

Apex Chair Syed Manzur Elahi passes away

Syed Manzur Elahi, the prominent businessman and chairman of Apex Group, passed away at a hospital in Singapore this morning. He was 83. He passed away around 7:30 am today while undergoing treatment in Singapore.

Former BASIS president Syed Almas Kabir confirmed the matter, adding:"Manzur's family was making arrangements to bring his body back to Dhaka later in the day." "Due to aging, Elahi's immune system had weakened. While he initially recovered from a lung infection, he later developed a stomach infection," he added.
