Dressed in cheap, worn-out clothes, Farida Begum looks much older than her 30 years.
Her pale face is etched with worry as she sits in her tiny bamboo-fenced shack next to a railway track in Tejgaon slum, in central Dhaka.
The shack has been home for her three-member family for the past four years. It has electricity but no running water, while the local slumlord charges them 1,400 taka (US$18) a month for rent.

80pc garment factories safe
More than 80 percent of Bangladesh’s garment factories supplying global retailers have been found to be safe, the government said on Monday, citing improvements made after a deadly 2013 accident.
Syed Ahmed, the inspector general of factories, said 1,475 garment factories had been assessed as part of a government initiative supported by the International Labour Organization, Canada, the Netherlands and United Kingdom.
Some 81 percent were found to adhere to building codes, as well as fire and electrical safety standards, he said.

Warnings of ISIS expansion gather steam
Last month, United States officials told Bangladeshi authorities that they had information suggesting that terrorists linked to the Islamic State were preparing to ramp up activity within Bangladesh’s borders.
