SAARC spirit is alive

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Thursday said that “the SAARC spirit is alive and well,” citing the strong presence and solidarity shown by South Asian nations at the funeral of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

Professor Yunus said he was deeply moved by the respect demonstrated by SAARC member states for the three-time Prime Minister of Bangladesh and the world’s second female Muslim head of government.

On Tuesday, the premises of Evercare Hospital in Bangladesh’s capital turned into a sombre focal point for a nation’s grief as news filtered out of the medical facility: Khaleda Zia, three-time prime minister and longtime leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), was dead.

Khaleda had been receiving treatment at the hospital since the night of November 23.

Millions attend Khaleda Zia’s janaza

Millions of people from across Bangladesh attended the namaz-e-janaza of BNP Chairperson and three-time former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia at Manik Mia Avenue in the capital.

The Janaza began around 3:00 pm, while the coffin wrapped in the national flag was brought to the venue around 2:45 pm with full state honour. Standing Committee Member of BNP, Nazrul Islam Khan, read out a brief biography of the late leader while Baitul Mukarram National Mosque Khatib Mufti Mohammad Abdul Malek conducted the funeral prayers.

Khaleda: Daughter of democracy dies at 80

Thrice-former prime minister and icon of democracy, Begum Khaleda Zia, passed away Tuesday morning while under treatment at the capital’s Evercare Hospital. She was 80. Tarique Rahman urges rebuilding nation anew

BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman today urged the party leaders and workers to work for rebuilding the nation anew.

“Wherever you stand, let us all strive to rebuild this country together,” he said while addressing the crowd in front of the BNP central office in Nayapaltan. “Let us exert as much effort as we can. Even if we see a single piece of paper or waste lying on the street, we should pick it up. Let us build this nation through these small, collective actions,” added Tarique Rahman.
